Virus Bulletin Conference 2012

The VB2012 – the 22nd Virus Bulletin International Conference is taking place between  26-28 September 2012 in Dallas, Texas, United States.

As every year, Avira is present there and we will blog every day about the most important presentations.

This year’s keynote address was The trade in security exploits: free speech or weapons in need of regulation of Christopher Soghoian, from the American Civil Liberties Union.

Christopher described the challenges the software industry and not only is facing when security researchers are for money and no longer only for fame.

Rather than a researcher making some money and helping to secure the Internet, exploits are now sold to parties, often governments, who are buying them for lawful interception, espionage and cyberwar. While some researchers used to complain about ‘no more free bugs’, some now make enough on a single sale to buy a house. The money is clearly better, but the ethics are far less clear.

The conference will end on Friday, 28th with the Panel discussion “The value (and danger) of offensive security research“.

I will post updates every day about the presentations and the offline discussions taking place.
